This article explains how to get to Nusa Penida island from Bali, which port to choose for departure and arrival, and which fast boat company to go with. You can also find all the time tables and fast boat price tickets. This article is part of a series of articles that give practical information on Nusa Penida island. It takes about 40 minutes to get to Nusa Penida from Sanur and only 20 minutes from Kusamba, which is located near Padang Bai. Some fast boat companies serve the port of Banjar Nyuh, which is close to Toyapakeh, and others serve the port of Sampalan. Both ports are located in the North of Nusa Penida. The safety on board is well maintained. I’ve never heard of any major incidents. Life jackets are available on board of all boats. Before the covid-19 coronavirus crisis, there used to be up to 23 fastboat companies connecting Bali and Nusa Penida on a daily basis. You could choose between 40 fast boats to get to Nusa Penida every day. Nowadays there are 8 fast boat companies that are still operating from Sanur to Nusa Penida, with a total of 18 boats every day. And 20 additional boats every day from Kusamba to Nusa Penida. A rapid test is no longer required. Most of the time the boats are not full, unless an important ceremony is being held in Nusa Penida that day. There is a brand new fast boat terminal now in Sanur with jetties. So you don’t need anymore to board in short pants from the beach!

Below you can find all the companies that connect Sanur to Nusa Penida and their timetables. However, I would recommend you to check the schedule anyway as it often changes. With the current schedule, the first fast boat leaves from Sanur at 7:30 am and the last one departs at 5.20 pm. From Nusa Penida to Sanur, the first fast boat leaves Nusa Penida at 7 am and the last one departs at 4:30 pm. Angel Billabong, Maruti and Semabu Hills are very good fast boat companies. Angel Billabong and Maruti have their own jetty in Nusa Penida. All the other companies disembark on the beach.

Which port in Bali and in Nusa Penida ?

The fast boat companies have different ports of departure in Bali and ports of arrival in Nusa Penida. Even though this gives you a lot of flexibility to plan your trip, it might also complicate your choice of departure and arrival port.

The 2 departure ports from Bali

• Sanur Beach (Jalan Matahari Terbit), most fast boat companies leave from this brand new port. 
• Kusamba port is located near Padang Bai. Some boat companies that serve Toyapakeh harbour and Sampalan leave from here. Boarding is from a floating pontoon. The duration of the crossing is much shorter (around 15 minutes).

The 3 arrival ports at Nusa Penida

• Banjar Nyuh, which is the port close to Toya Pakeh and where most of the fast boat companies arrive.
• Sampalan, located in the North-East part of the island.
• Buyuk, located in the North of the island. Only some boat companies moor here.

How to choose the right port ?

You have to choose the particular fast boat company and port depending on where you’re coming from in Bali and and where you are going to in Nusa Penida. In short, if you’re coming from Amed or Sidemen, your best option is to take Kusamba as your port of departure. If you’re coming from Sanur, Seminyak, or Canggu, I recommend you to leave from Sanur Beach. Coming from Ubud, both ports are equally far, so you can choose either option. If you’re planning to stay in Sampalan, Buyuk, Ped or Atuh Beach, choose Sampalan as your arrival port in Nusa Penida. For Ped, Toya Pakeh or Crystal Bay, I recommend you to choose Banjar Nyuh Harbour as your port of arrival.

What is the price for a boat trip from Bali to Nusa Penida ?

Most of the companies charge a public price of IDR 150,000 (one way). If you have a Kitas, you should only pay IDR 125,000  for a one way ticket from Sanur. The public price for a one way ticket from Kusamba to Nusa Penida used to be IDR 100,000. The price might differ depending on the boat company, as some include the transfer to or from the port in the price as well.

Once you arrive you will probably have to pay to enter Nusa Penida a fee of IDR 25000 that will be used to imrove the infrastructure of the island, mainly the roads.

Do you need to book your boat trip in advance?

It may be better to book your boat trip one day in advance, especially on days when an important ceremony is being held, because the boats may be full. On some special days holidays like Nyepi, Nyepi Laut, Galungan or Kuningan there might not be any boat at all. Please keep this in mind. Also, it is better to be at the port a little in advance as the boats usually leave on time. Sometimes they even leave a few minutes before the official departure time.

What to do, where to go in Nusa Penida ?

There is a lot of things to do once you’re on the island. It is a paradise for scuba divers, the landscape is great and there are many adventures and tours available! The flexible boat schedule allows you to have a full day in Nusa Penida, but I would recommend you to stay a bit longer. With just one day you’ll most likely spend a lot of the time on the road, rushing from one viewpoint to the other. I would suggest to stay at least one night, in one of the many hotels on the island, enjoy a sunset on this beautiful island, and maybe even go snorkeling or diving with manta rays at Manta Point the day after, or enjoy a swim at Crystal Bay!

How to get from Nusa Penida to the Gili Islands?

Several fast boat companies also offer connections to or from the Gili islands. Eka Jaya was the best one before Covid but will not restart the direct connection between Nusa Penida and Gili before 2023. Now the most popular fast boat companies are Semaya One and D Prabu. They will make a stop at Padang Bai.
