How do you send a text with the Enter key?

I use a Bluetooth keyboard with my iPad. When I am sending messages through the Messages app, the enter key does not initiate a "send" the way I expect (it, instead, just returns down to the next line). Is there a way to make the "enter" key send the message instead of dropping down to the next line? Some magic key combination perhaps?

Depending on the preference you set, pressing the Enter key on your desktop will either send a message or start a new line in Slack. Use the steps below to change this preference at any time.

Choose your Enter key preference

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Choose Advanced.
  4. Under When writing a message, press Enter to, select your preference.

Tip: If you choose Send the message, you can use ShiftEnter to start a new line. If you choose Start a new line, you can use ⌘Enter (Mac) or CtrlEnter (Windows/Linux) to send the message.

Awesome!

Thanks so much for your feedback!

By India Today Web Desk: Whatsapp is a very popular and widely-used social media messenger. It is installed by billions of people across the globe. After installing WhatsApp on your Android or iOS phone, you can exchange messages using an active internet connection.

You can configure whether tapping enter sends a message or not. By default, the Enter key on WhatsApp Messenger is programmed to add a new line between text. However, you can configure your "Enter" key to send messages in lieu of adding additional spaces. You need to disable that by unchecking that checkbox, and then enter the key will be work back again normal on your app.

The usual way to add a new paragraph on a standard keyboard is the enter key. In the settings area for WhatsApp, you can adjust the behavior for the return/enter key. Check below the steps that will likely resolve this for you.

Here is how to change the send button to enter on WhatsApp:

  • Launch WhatsApp on your Andriod phone.
  • Go to More options and tap on settings.
  • Then tap on Chats.
  • Turn Enter button for send on or off.

If you want to quickly be able to send your message, you can set the enter key as a button to send your message. From the settings area for WhatsApp, you can adjust the behavior for the return/enter key.

Note: Now you can send messages that disappear on WhatsApp by turning in disappearing messages on WhatsApp. Once enabled, new messages sent in the chat will disappear after seven days.

Usingandto circle around the controls worked perfectly for me inside Whatsapp! Thank you for the suggestion!

Your mileage may vary depending on the app you use, or the webpage you are inputting text into. For example, I'm writing this on my phone, and the "Send" button does not have a tabstop, so I have to press it using the screen.

Mind you, the right solution for this problem is for app makers to come up with a PC app! I don't understandy why Whatsapp doesn't have a PC app! Line does have one and it works so well!

I understand that if you hit Option + Enter/Return on an iPad the cursor moves to a new line whereas hitting the Enter/Return key by itself sends the message. But, this seems to be backwards to me. Having the Enter/Return key be the default way of sending messages is very frustrating, because I often accidentally hit the Enter/Return key when I’m going for the Shift key on my Bluetooth keyboard and my messages get sent midstream. It should work like the iPhone where the Enter/Return key moves the cursor to a new line. Then, when you are ready to send the message, hit Option + Enter, or some other combination of keys, which won’t accidentally send a message before you are ready to send it.

@WilcoxPD you are perfectly right 👏🏻!

For many users ( at least my family members, some work colleagues ) accustomed to typing text,

the [return] key is a typing text key, not at all a function key.

This strange mapping is causing errors on iPad and Mac too. Thus causing many messages sent one line at a time like

sausage slices.

( Now you all know the origin of all these sausage slices looking messages 😊).

On the other hand it is fully natural to think of [option]+[return] as a function key and an intelligent use would be to use

The first is in Settings (tap the three dots when viewing your conversations) > Scroll down to Sending and uncheck Send using Enter. If you're having the smiley issue, keep scrolling down to the bottom and tap Keyboard. In that menu it says Smiley or Enter - make sure yours is set to enter. Hope that helps.
