How do you find your inbox on Facebook?

Users have discovered hundreds of messages locked in a hidden inbox within Facebook’s messaging system.

The inbox, accessible on the web or Facebook Messenger apps for smartphones and tablets, is part of Facebook’s filtering system, designed to catch spam and other unwanted messages.

However, users, including myself and others within the Guardian, have discovered their “filtered” inbox full of legitimate messages that never made it to the main inbox or Messenger app.

The simplest way to access the inbox is to navigate to facebook.com/messages/other on the desktop.

Within the Messenger app the hidden inbox is buried under four menus. To get to it tap Settings, then People, then Message Requests and tap on the “See filtered requests” link.

The filtered messages include anything attempting to send you messages that you have manually filtered out as unwanted, as well as messages from people who are not connected with you on Facebook. I discovered some tens of messages dating back as far as 2008.

Most of the time you can safely ignore it - Facebook built the system to stop messages you want to see being sent to spam – but it can also trap messages such as those informing you of a friend’s death or a story tip that ends up in filtered and hidden from your Facebook-obsessed eyes. Even for MPs.

Eek! Just looked at the 'filtered' message thing on Facebook and seen there are literally thousands of messages... https://t.co/LSKyFcWN7f

You know you have a hidden inbox on Facebook, right? The "other" message folder is reserved for those people who message you and aren't one of your Facebook friends.

There's a chance some messages from nonfriends will go to your main inbox (depending on your settings), but most of the time these messages make their way to your other messages, without you ever being notified of a waiting message. Unless the sender decides to pay $1 to guarantee the message ends up in your main folder.

Up until recently, the only way to access your other inbox was to log on to Facebook.com and navigate to it on the Messages screen. It appears Facebook is finally ramping up plans to bring it to your Android device, as the feature is included in the latest Facebook for Android beta build.

To be able to view your other inbox, you'll need to sign up to participate in the Facebook for Android beta, which is free and requires a Google account. Once you've signed up and downloaded the beta from the Play store, you can begin digging around and finding new features.

One of those new features, of course, is a gear icon next to Messages in the navigation window. Tapping on the icon lets you navigate to your archived messages or your other inbox. Here you'll find any missed connections, or random messages from complete strangers wanting to chat it up; if you find anything at all.

YOUR Facebook account has a hidden inbox that may be filled with unread messages you've never seen.

That's because the social media giant has a tricky-to-locate SECOND Messenger inbox that's easy to miss.

What is Facebook’s hidden inbox?

The messages are from people who you're not friends with on Facebook, and are logged as "message requests".

For some reason, Mark Zuckerberg's social media behemoth doesn't send you a notification when you get one – and they don't appear in your default inbox.

Instead, they crop up in a special "message requests" folder.

How can I find the hidden inbox in Facebook?

To find it, first open up the Messenger app on your smartphone.

From here, select your profile picture icon in the top left of the screen.

Scroll down to "message requests" – tap on it to see your unread messages.

If you don't know the person who's got in contact, Facebook will show you a bit of information about them to get you up to speed.

They won't know if you've seen the message until you reply, so no need to worry about looking rude if you choose not to respond.

Be careful though – once you ping them a message it'll connect your accounts so you can message one another as if you were Facebook friends.

That's not the only secret Facebook Messenger feature.

There are certain messages you can send that unlock hidden games.

Send a basketball emoji then tap it to unlock a game.

You can also type "@FacebookChess" to launch a chess challenge.

Alternatively, tap the More button in the toolbar, and then click the controller icon.

That will generate a list of games that you can play with the friend you're chatting to.

Why can't I see messages in inbox on Facebook?

If you can't see your messages or you're getting a “No internet Connection” error, you can try: Updating to the latest version of Messenger. Quitting and reopening the Messenger app. Checking your Wi-Fi or internet connection.

Where is your inbox located?

In the navigation area, where the e-mail folders are listed, the Inbox is usually found near the top of the list. When you open an e-mail client or log in to an online e-mail account, the Inbox is selected by default.
