The Heritage Grand is the only luxury hotel in Trinidad, a colourful Unesco-protected city of churches, palaces and plazas sheltered in sloping folds of the Escambray mountains facing the Caribbean Sea. And while there are plenty of great private restaurants now in Trinidad — they boomed from three in 2010 to hundreds ten years later — the elegant restaurant is the only place in Trinidad with a fine wine, cheese and cigar collection. The adults-only hotel, once the site of a 1920s entertainment hall, opened as the pistachio-hued Grand on the central Cespedes Park, a favourite city spot for weekend bandstand concerts. Book rooms with a terrace for your alfresco evening drinks. But where you might linger for longer is in the large, light and convivial lobby centred around a tinkling fountain.

I’m not sure any Cuban beach could be creamier or the sea any bluer than the twinned pale honey Playa Ensenachos and Playa Megano. These two beautiful curves of buttery sand face a shimmering turquoise sea and are straddled by just one resort — the Iberostar Selection Ensenachos. The big-sky and sea views are spell binding especially when the Atlantic is mill-pond calm. The resort isn’t super modern. You’ll come for the sun-soaked beach, the huge lush gardens and the watersports. The smarter adults-only enclave of Coral Level villas with terraces and whirlpools is distant from the main hubbub. Stay closest to Playa El Megano which just has the edge for the beach beauty prize. The best spot? The tiny wooden beach bar raised above the sands for on-tap drinks.

A low-key beach resort with style and a boutique vibe is a rare find in Cuba. But the intimate Buenavista is this dreamy ticket. Hidden away at the far end of the coral islands of Cayo Santa Maria is this adults-only retreat tucked behind three sugar-soft white beaches. With unobtrusive butler service, à la carte service from breakfast until night, and nothing to do but lounge on a daybed, swim, snorkel and get a treatment at the YHI-Spa, it’s the perfect hideaway. The romantic junior suite, bright in raspberry and white, with an alfresco shower are my tip. Looking for more seclusion? Book into the Buenavista’s two new swanky villas (of three and four bedrooms) with private pools — the first of their kind in Cuba.

11. Malecon 663, Havana

Best for lovers of design
This is Havana’s coolest hotel. You might check in for the sea views and the Habanero design but you’ll leave with new friends after meeting the cream of Cuban creatives who work or come for coffee and cocktails at this Atlantic-facing boutique stay. Charanga Habanera conga player Orlandito Mengual and his French wife Sandra have devoted time, love and artistry into this three-story colonial townhouse with retro and quirky rooms celebrating decades of design in Cuba — such as art deco and the 1950s. The rooftop terrace buzzes into life at sundown with alfresco cocktails and DJs on the decks.

12. Cayo Guillermo Resort Kempinski, Cayo Guillermo

Best for luxury beach living
For barefoot luxury living and those who want to live out their salty seadog Hemingway fantasy, look no further. In 2020, in a double-first for Cuba, the Cayo Guillermo Resort Kempinski opened the island’s first overwater villas and the country’s first beach resort that’s not an all-inclusive. After gazing out to sea from your ocean-view room and its infinity plunge pool, head to nearby Playa Pilar, one of the country’s most beautiful butter-soft crescents of white sand and troll for fish in the same waters sailed by Ernest Hemingway. By night order the writer’s favourite, a daiquiri rum cocktail, before you dine at the overwater fresh fish restaurant and try Cuba’s best smokes at the Hemingway cigar bar. Cayo Guillermo is the island’s best spot for kitesurfing, too.

13. Melia Paradisus Varadero, Varadero

Best for children
A dedicated kids’ club, pools for little people and a children’s buffet: the prayers of parents have been answered. The Paradisus Varadero combines the smart stay that parents want with so many choices for children they’ll never get bored. The entertainment hub is open to children aged eight months to 18, with a separate baby club, games rooms (electronic and traditional), hangout zones and an all-day buffet designed with young people in mind. And that’s just the undercover stuff. Outside there’s a beach (with concierge service), an adult pool, a paddling pool for smalls and a children’s pool bobbing with inflatables. The all-inclusive resort’s Family Concierge section also comes with priority booking for the resort’s tennis, catamarans and scuba diving. Exhausted? Adults can claim a discount on a massage at the YHI-Spa. Worn out completely? 14. Paradisus Río de Oro, Guardalavaca

Best for nature lovers
Those looking for tiny scallops of sand scooped out of the fretted limestone coast of northeastern Cuba should make a beeline for the Paradisus Rio de Oro. Many of the cluster of all-inclusive resorts north of Holguin city lie exposed along the coastline but the Rio de Oro on Playa Esmeralda is embraced by planting and wild succulents — the most densely foliaged of any resort in Cuba. It’s tropical heaven. Access to the bronzed sand coves is for Royal Service guests only but you’ll want the rooms here anyway for their elegant, warm interiors. Once you’ve had your fill at one of the eight restaurants, pick up a snorkel and head out into the turquoise for some of the best coral-rich sea around the island.

15. Gardens, Havana

Best for the boho crowd
Gardens is an impeccably restored colonial townhouse found in the buzzy streets of historic Old Havana. Open the unmarked door, climb the Cuban marble staircase, and discover a world of linen-draped four-posters, a patio of tropical foliage, soft lights and rustic seating, and a living room with a vintage piano, honesty bar, and a striking piece of Cuban art. Talented Cuban craftsmen have revived the property and fashioned one of Havana’s must-stay bolt holes. 16. Mystique Casa Perla, Varadero

Best for low-key beach living
Casa Perla is a breath of fresh air on a glorious beach dominated by large, albeit low-rise, all inclusives. The new adults-only boutique hotel (16+), a short stroll to the dazzling sands through coconut palm-shaded gardens, is a quiet haven away from the hubbub of Varadero’s main strip. If aqua exercise, constant disco, salsa classes and boom boxes by the pool are not your thing, this small hotel, in the beachside style of the 1940s, is perfect. Just four of the ten rooms have ocean views and you’ll want one of those: they come with private terraces and hot tubs. Following a few morning laps in the small swimming pool, breakfast like royalty on the garden terrace watching the waves, then find your way to the silky sands, and the private shaded day beds for sun-drenched days of relaxation. Casa Perla has its own restaurant and 24-hour room service but as it sits at the very edge of Varadero town, don’t miss dinners at the beach resort’s top two private restaurants — Salsa Suarez and Varadero 60.

This one-of-a-kind urban retreat splashed with colour is very close to Havana’s harbour and has seven quirky bedrooms to choose between. Breakfast on sausage, bacon and hash browns on the mezzanine terrace, followed by tapas and beer at the all-day café. On a balmy evening, don’t miss the house Residencia Daiquiri cocktail on the rooftop terrace with its harbour and Greek Orthodox Cathedral views. The father and daughter team who run Residencia Santa Clara are super helpful, and you can’t really beat the location. It’s a short stroll to the Bay of Havana, the Havana Club rum museum and the handsome, buzzy Plaza Vieja with its bars, cafés, museums, and galleries.
