The exterior design is quite a departure from a conventional seven-seaters like the boxy Honda BR-V. It might not have struck a chord with everyone, but with its quirky lines and unique design touches, you could be forgiven to think that it came from a French manufacturer.

From the front, a pair of vertical thin black plastic cladding extends from the headlights down along the bumper to the fog lamps. At first glance, it is as though the little MPV has grown itself a moustache and a side burn. A pair of sleek bi-LED projector headlamps with LED daytime running lights complete the look of the front fascia.

The quirky theme continues for the interior of the Toyota Sienta. The instrument panel is elevated and sits further into the dashboard like the ones found on the Peugeot 3008, yet another nod to the French quirkiness.

Unlike the usual sensible Toyota interior, the dashboard seems to have been sculpted and molded with curves and contour. The cupholders are cleverly integrated to the dashboard and the cooling box hidden above the glove compartment is rather un-Toyota-like.

Hard black plastics are used extensively on the dashboard, centre console as well as the door panels accented by brushed-aluminium-like plastic trims. Leather wrapped steering wheel with orange stitching does liven up the cabin.

The Toyota Sienta also gets brown fabric upholstery and foldable second and third row seats. The interior feels spacious and airy partly thanks to the front and rear quarter windows. Access to the second and third row is a breeze thanks to the wide opening of the power sliding door and a clever ‘one touch tumble’ seat folding mechanism.

As standard, the Toyota Sienta comes fitted with an acoustic windscreen, keyless entry, push-button start, Optitron instruments with integrated multi-info display, automatic air-conditioning, a 6.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with voice recognition and a reverse camera.

Also included is a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, dual powered sliding doors with soft close function, premium security and solar tinting and a locally-fitted Digital Video Recorder (DVR).

Safety features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TC), Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), ISOFIX on the second row, and 3 SRS airbags. The Toyota Sienta achieved 5-Star in the ASEAN NCAP crash safety rating.

Engine

Powering the front wheels is Toyota’s 2NR-FE 1.5-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine, producing 107 PS at 6000 RPM and 140 NM of torque from 4200 RPM.

The ECO Meter available onboard serves as a helpful indication to drivers who wish to maximize the engine’s efficiency.

Transmission

The 1.5-litre engine is paired to a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) with 7-speed sport sequential shiftmatic mode that aims to provide smoother power delivery and fuel efficiency.

Toyota Sienta Ride Comfort

With a MacPherson Struts up front and a torsion beam at the rear, the suspension set up does its job. The ride and handling is not exceptional, nor it is bad. At city driving speeds, the ride is supple and stable enough to ferry 7 people onboard comfortably.

Even though effort has been made to keep the noise level down in the cabin (foam filled pillars, sound dampening material on the floor), there is still much room for improvement in terms of the NVH levels. Road and wind noise becomes apparent at highway speeds and the whiny sound of the CVT transmission penetrates the cabin when the engine is pushed hard.

Toyota Sienta offers a unique proposition in the compact 7-seater MPV segment. With premium features like the dual power sliding doors made available at this price point, it could well be the deal maker for those in the market for vehicle of this type. The exterior design might not be up to everyone’s taste, but there is no denying that the Toyota Sienta excels at what it was intended to do, which is to be an excellent multi-purpose vehicle.
