A. Pengertian Hipotesis Nol (Ho)Hipotesis adalah penjelasan sementara tentang tingkah laku, gejala-gejala, atau kejadian tertentu yang telah terjadi atau yang akan terjadi. Suatu hipotesis adalah pernyataan masalah yang spesifik. Karakteristik hipotesis yang baik di antaranya dapat diteliti, menunjukkan hubungan antara variabel-variabel, dapat diuji, mengikuti temuan-temuan penelitian terdahulu.Adapun fungsi-fungsi hipotesis di antaranya membimbing pikiran peneliti dalam memulai penelitian, menentukan tahapan atau prosedur penelitian, membantu menetapkan format dalam menyajikan, menganalisis dan menafsirkan data dalam tesis. Jenis hipotesis dilihat dari kategori rumusannya dibagi menjadi dua bagian yaitu hipotesis nihil (hipotesis statistik) yang biasa disingkat dengan Ho, dan hipotesis alternatif (hipotesis kerja) atau disingkat Ha.Berenson et al (2006) menyatakan beberapa poin penting tentang hipotesis nol dan hipotesis alternatif sebagaimana dirinci sebagai berikut:1. Hipotesis Nol (H0) mewakili kondisi status quo, atau kondisi yang sekarang diyakini kebenarannya, atau suatu pernyataan yang didasarkan pada teori atau konsep.2. Hipotesis Alternatif (H1) adalah lawan dari statemen H0 atau mewakili klaim atau dugaan dari peneliti terhadap kemungkinan tidak berlakunya kondisi status quo atau kondisi saat ini sebagai bagian dari tujuan penelitian yang hendak diraih.3. Jika H0 ditolak, maka peneliti memiliki bukti secara statistik bahwa hipotesis alternatif yang berlaku atau yang dianggap benar.4. Jika ternyata hasil dari penelitian H0 tidak ditolak, maka peneliti gagal membuktikan bahwa hipotesis alternatif adalah benar, meskipun demikian tidak berarti bahwa H0 terbukti benar.5. Hipotesis nol selalu mengarah pada nilai spesifik dari suatu nilai dari parameter populasi dan tidak boleh berupa suatu sampel statistik.6. Pernyataan hipotesis nol selalu berupa tanda sama dengan, yang menghubungkan pada nilai-nilai spesifik dari suatu parameter populasi.7. Pernyataan dari hipotesis alternatif tidak pernah menggunakan tanda sama dengan untuk menghubungkan nilai-nilai spesifik dari suatu parameter populasi.
B. Hipotesis Nol
Guna pengujian hipotesis yang akan diuji secara statistik, dibuat hipotesis nol yaitu rumusan pernyataan yang didahului dengan kalimat yang tidak ada hubungan atau tidak ada pengaruh antara variabel bebas terhadap variabel terikat. Untuk menguji kebenaran hipotesis yang artinya ada penolakan terhadap hipotesis nol, jika kita menggunakan nilai p=0,05 maka apabila nilai dari data yang diperoleh setelah dihitung dengan menggunakan rumus statistik tertentu angka p<0,05 berarti hipotesis nol ditolak atau dengan kata lain hipotesis diterima, sedangkan jika nilai hitungan ternyata nilai p>0,05 atau p=0,05 berarti hipotesis nol diterima.C. Contoh hipotesis nol atau hipotesis statistik
1. Tidak ada hubungan antara kebiasaan minum susu botol dengan karies rampan (kesehatan gigi anak).2. Tidak ada perbedaan tentang angka kematian akibat penyakit jantung antara penduduk perkotaan dengan penduduk pedesaan.3. Tidak ada perbedaan antara status gizi anak balita yang tidak mendapat ASI pada waktu bayi, dengan status gizi anak balita yang mendapat ASI pada waktu bayi.4. Tidak ada perbedaan angka penderita sakit diare antara kelompok penduduk yang menggunakan air minum dari PAM dengan kelompok penduduk yang menggunakan air minum dari sumur.5. Tidak ada hubungan antara tingkat pendidikan orang tua dengan prestasi belajar siswa SD.Hipotesis nihil (Ho) menyatakan tidak ada hubungannya atau pengaruh antara variabel independen (X) dan variabel dependen (Y). Artinya, dalam rumusan hipotesis, yang diuji adalah ketidakbenaran variabel (X) mempengaruhi (Y). Hipotesa Nol (Null hypotheses) Ho. sering juga disebut Hipotesa statistik, karena biasanya dipakai dalam penelitian yang bersifat statistik, yaitu diuji dengan perhitungan statistik.
